Newspapers have recently been focusing on a “we are local” campaign. They are focusing on their strengths of knowing and reporting on local information since national and international news is easy to find from sources like CNN and national networks. **But** Google Maps is about to give them a run for their money.
This service is amazing. You type in your address, type in a category (e.g. coffee) and it will show your a map of where the coffee shops are around you. Complete with names and phone numbers. In addition, this has probably one of the best UIs I’ve seen in a while. You can drag the maps around to see more, and you can click on a business to have it show a little pop-up of the business location.
It’s so detailed (their map data is from [Navteq](http://www.navteq.com)), that it shows the medians in the cross street near my house.
