Middle-age worry-warts

Reading Time: 1

I love demographic trends and this one is an interesting one.

While pundits across the board tried to figure out the origins of a more conservative public for the past 30 years, I haven’t seen any real compelling reasons yet. But in the most recent newsletter from market research company New Strategist, they argue that because we have the largest proportion of people in middle-age right now (since the 1940s-50s), we end up with people whose sole focus is on raising kids and making money. With the middle-age group’s primary focus on these two priorities they tend to worry about traditionally conservative political points: taxes are too high, schools are crap, crime is rampant.

I find some of this startlingly true for myself. With a 3-year old, all of a sudden I start following what’s happening in the school system. Then I start to bitch-and-moan about my most recent property assessment. And then I start seeing too much crime around me (For gods sake, I live in Iowa. What crime??).

Uhh…must…resist…slippery…slope…
