Reading Time: 1

So we’ve started getting the Sunday New York Times to compliment our existing subscription to the Sunday Des Moines Register. But for the last two weeks my wife has walked out to the driveway (where the Times lands) to get the paper and left the Register sitting outside on the front step.

Every Sunday, the easy-read-but-uninteresting Register sits on the stoop saying, “Please read me! I came right to your door.” But we walk past the whining Register to grab the Times which is sitting in the driveway saying, “I don’t give a damn if you want me. I’ll just go to the neighbors if you don’t read me.” I feel bad for the Register.

While I doubt the Register has the ability to win us back, I’m sure the cosmopolitan charm and the I’m-so-better-than-this-place snootiness of the Times will grate with time. At least it takes me near an hour to get through the Times as opposed to the 5 minutes it takes before the Register is in the recycling bin.

Is this the end of populist journalism?! Oh, yeah, I forgot that the Register has turned the populist spigot to just a trickle…
